Below is some general event information for all events offered at this year's "Skate Asia 2008" competition. Please read the new ISI Rule Revisions that are listed on separate summary page of this website. Also refer to the current 2008 edition of the ISI Skaters & Coaches Handbook and the 2007 ISI Judge Manual for more complete event information details and guidelines.
ARTISTIC SOLO 1-10
Skaters perform a program to music with emphasis on strong edges, flow, choreography, innovative moves and musical interpretation. There is no score for technical ability in this event.
The Duration time for FS6-10 levels is 2 minutes. Duration time for FS1-5 levels is 1.5 minutes.

COUPLES 1-10 - (Similar / Mixed)
Two skaters perform their routine to music that requires maneuvers from their current Freestyle test level. This event is like a Freestyle skating program by two skaters in unison.

COUPLES SPOTLIGHT - (Low / Medium / High)
A spotlight routine of two skaters together performing a routine that is entertaining using costumes and props. If enough entries, we will also divide events into Character / Dramatic / Light Entertainment categories. Please mark the correct category box on your entry form.

This is the skater's version of Ballroom Dancing. Test levels begin with the basic steps then advance to a high performance level. Ice Dancing can be enjoyed at any age or level. Skaters ARE NOT REQUIRED to pass the Delta test to participate in Ice Dance events.
Ice Dancing 1-10 tests may be taken solo or with a partner.
There is a new set of Free Dance 1-10 tests. These separate Free Dance tests must be passed before competing in the Free Dance events at competitions.

ENSEMBLE
This new Ensemble event is for small groups of 3-7 skaters. It's the same as a small production number or a group spotlight event by using music & theme with elaborate costumes & props to enhance the theme. Costume/prop guidelines and judging criteria is the same as for Family Spotlight events. Duration 3 minutes.

FAMILY SPOTLIGHT
Two or more family members can show their skating skills and acting ability in this Spotlight event. This event is divided by number of skaters only and not by age groups or levels, unless enough entries. Duration for all Family Spotlight events is 1.5 minutes.

FIGURES 1-10
Based on the original "school" figure eight. Skaters perform a required figure patterns 3 times on each foot. Judging is based on the size & shape of the circles, edges, flow & pattern.

FOOTWORK 1-10
A one-minute program to music using various turns and connecting steps with limited jumps or spins.

FREESTYLE 1-10
A program routine to music with emphasis on the required test level maneuvers from the skater's current freestyle level. Various skills are required, depending on the test level.

FREESTYLE SYNCHRO TEAM 1-10
Three to seven skaters can enter this newer form of group skating. They must perform the same identical Freestyle program by shadow skating in unison. All of the test level requirements must be performed by each skater at the same time.

HOCKEY - Skating, Shooting, & Goalie
Hockey Skating - Skater skates 1 lap forward around the rink with the puck on the stick. They drop the puck, and then turn around backwards to skate 1 lap backwards. Skater with fastest time wins.
Hockey Shooting - Skater skates with stick & puck around a zig-zag cone course and then shoots the puck into the goal. Timing stops when the puck enters the goal. Skater with fastest time wins.
Hockey Goalie - Skater tries to stop 10 shots on goal. Goalie stopping the most shots wins.

INTERPRETIVE 1-10
Skaters hear a piece of music during the group warm-up and then mentally choreograph a skating routine to it. Emphasis is on the skater's ability to choreograph to music and not on the difficulty of the skating maneuvers performed. There will be 2 skaters on the ice at the same time (Panel A / B format), but those 2 skaters will not be competing against each other in the same group. No backward arabesques/spirals are allowed in this event for the safety of all competitors.

JUMP & SPIN (Low / Medium / Intermediate / High)
Two skaters enter the ice as a team. The first skater performs their choice of a required jump 2 times, followed by the second skater performing their choice of a required spin 2 times. Only the best attempt at each element will be scored. Jump & Spin events will be done with Panel A / B / C format.
ALL JUMP & SPIN EVENTS will be done on 1/2 ICE ONLY.
Approximate 1/2 ICE SIZE at Sunway Pyramid Ice is 39m x 22.5m

Group number where 8 or more skaters perform constantly changing patterns on the ice. Props can be used and use of colors is also an important part of the "design".

PATTERN SKATING
This unique form of group skating is done by at least 4 people. Working off a common circle, skaters "draw" patterns, formations, and designs on the ice to music.

PRE ALPHA / ALPHA / BETA / GAMMA / DELTA SOLO
Skater performs a one-minute program routine to music that emphasizes the required test level maneuvers from Pre-Alpha through Delta levels. Depending on test level, specific skill requirements must be performed.

RHYTHMIC SKATING
This new entertaining event requires the use of one hand-held prop listed below. The program should contain elements that employ the use of the prop throughout the routine. The skater must maintain control of the prop at all times.
The same rules and limitations apply as for Spotlight solo events. Props are not allowed on the event Warm-Up.

SOLO COMPULSORIES 1-10
The skater will perform only the 3 required maneuvers listed below from their Freestyle test level IN ANY ORDER. They have only one attempt at each maneuver. Additional maneuvers such as ANY JUMP, SPIN, OR GLIDING MANEUVER from a test level or any uncaptured move ARE NOT ALLOWED.
There is a 1-minute time limit for all levels.

SPEEDRACING
Skaters will race only forwards around the rink for two laps. Skaters under 10 years will race one lap. Skaters will start 2 at a time from 2 different points on the rink. The skater with the fastest time in the entire age group event will win (not just fastest of the 2 skaters in that timing group). Helmets will be provided by the host rink. All skaters must supply their own elbow and knee pads to compete. You will not be allowed to skate without them!

SPOTLIGHT SOLO PROGRAM
This is an entertaining and "fun" routine which emphasis the skater's acting ability and not technical skating ability. a) CHARACTER - a famous, easily identifiable character. b) DRAMATIC - a theatrical performance that sets a mood and evokes an emotional response. c) LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT - to entertain / light-hearted. Please mark the correct category box on your Entry Form.
NOTE: Solo Spotlight Duration for FS6-10 levels is now 2 minutes.

STROKING (Alpha / Beta / Gamma / Delta Only)
Skaters compete together in groups wearing colored numbers for easy identification by the Judges. They perform only forward stroking and crossovers in both directions. This is the very basic skill of skating.

SURPRISE EVENTS - (All Ages & Levels)
A "fun" event where individual skaters are grouped together by age and/or skating levels. The skaters don't know what they will be asked to do until the event begins, but this event usually consists of tasks not related to skating ability level.

SYNCHRONIZED COMPULSORIES
Synchronized Formation and Skating teams (8-24 skaters) shall perform 4 or 5 required elements to music, with no additional moves permitted. SYNCHRONIZED TEAMS
A group number for 8-24 skaters to perform in unison. They can incorporate various skating formations such as circles, pinwheels, lines, footwork sequences and dance steps. TEAM COMPULSORIES 1-10
Six skaters perform a lively routine. During the program each skater performs one required test level requirement two times each. Lively music and entertaining themes are featured in the event.
Note: FS6-10 teams require 7 skaters.

TEAM SURPRISE (All Levels)
This is a fun, new "team" version of Surprise events. Each team must have 4 skaters. Each skater may only participate on one "team". Skaters under 6 years are not permitted in Team Surprise events.
Teams can be made with all males, all females, or any combination - as long as the resulting test level category is the same for ALL TEAM MEMBERS. Entries will be divided into competition groups based on the average age of all 4 team members.
These "surprises" will be relay-type event where every member of the team must complete a required task. Some events might be related to skating ability - and some may not. Grab your friends and join this EXCITING NEW TEAM EVENT … FOR FUN ! ! !
